The Tsunami

Sumatra - December 26th, 2004

On the morning of December 26th, 2004 a magnitude 9.3 earthquake struck the northwest coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra
The earthquake was the result of a complex slip of the fault where the oceanic portion of the Indian Plate slides under Sumatra
The earthquake deformed the ocean floor, pushing the overlying water up into a Tsunami wave.

Nearby areas were devastated by a succession of waves which, in certain areas, could have been as high as 30 meters (100 ft.) and killed nearly 300,000 people including many visiting tourists.
It is with our sincere respect and condolences, in accordance with the cover page guidelines for the Bulletin Board, that the following undistorted photograph serves as a warning of what may reoccur.
